Navigating the world of job searches and interviews can be difficult and tedious to say the least, and after sending off dozens of applications without having any success, it can be dejecting and disheartening. When applying for jobs it’s important to bear in mind that employers face an unending pile of CVs to read through every day, most of which are discarded within the first 60 seconds of skim reading. With countless resumes regurgitating the same spiel over and over, it’s important to make your CV stand out in the sea of applications. To achieve the perfect CV for the Hospitality Industry jobs, you need to plan out and tailor your resume to best reflect your own capabilities, optimising the content to showcase your skills. Section 1 – Name & Contact Details
First and foremost, at the top of your CV, in pride of place should be your name and contact details. Though this may be a simple and basic point, it’s vitality and importance can’t be overemphasised. Your name, your address, your phone number and your email should be the first thing any employer should see, after all without these all important details how are they to know whose CV they’re looking at? Make your contact details bold and ensure that your CV isn’t overlooked.
Section 2 – A Brief Introduction
Though in an ideal world all CVs would be read through thoroughly by every employee, the reality is often far different. With so many CVs to go through, a lot of employers can spare no longer than a fleeting glance at each resume, having to make a snap decision as to whether they want to keep reading or not. To ensure that your CV makes it through the first round of the elimination process, include a few lines at the top of your resume that briefly summarise your primary skill sets, key experiences and previous work history that makes you an ideal candidate.
Section 3 – Qualifications
A simple but necessary section, the qualifications section allows you to showcase your skills and achievements within the field of education. By listing your academic background, employees can formulate a good overall impression of your skills and accomplishments. Although there’s no need to list every exam result you’ve ever achieved, by summing up your academic background you can give potential employers a synopsis of your abilities in a few simple lines.
However perhaps even more important than your schooling history, is the skills sets and qualifications you have acquired outside of the schoolroom. As the hospitality industry is so competitive it’s important to showcase all talents and qualifications you may have that might make you stand out from other applicants. Whether you have a diploma in Professional Cookery, or received certification in event design or have passed a health and safety course, every accomplishment is worth bragging about on
your CV. What may seem inconsequential to you, could be incredibly significant to potential employers, and could separate you from other candidates.
Section 4 – Work Experience
Arguably even more important than the qualification section, your work history showcases your experience and capability within your chosen field. Though qualifications are fantastic for demonstrating where candidates show potential, work experience cements and physically proves what you are actually capable of, making it an infinitely more crucial section for employers. Potential employers want candidates they can count on, and your work history section is the ideal place to showcase this. As this is such a crucial section, it’s important to really go to town on including plenty of description and details. This should be the biggest and most content heavy part of your CV, and this should be apparent from simply glancing at your resume. To ensure
that your work history is extensive and detailed, rather than simply listing your past job roles, go into detail on each position you held – explaining your roles and some of the key tasks and responsibilities you undertook within your position. Whilst completing this section, it’s important to tailor each description and skill to the job you’re applying for. For example if you’re applying for a position in events, your employer would undoubtedly be very interested to know that in your previous job you organised and hosted a charity ball for your company, however they may not be so interested in learning that you were responsible for clearing out the office’s coffee machine every Thursday. You have a very limited space in which to communicate your skills in a CV so make it count and focus on those skills that are relevant to the job you are applying for.
Section 5 – Skills
An important segment not to be overlooked, the skills section allows you to market yourself as a unique individual, highlighting your talents and your skills beyond the realms of educational and professional environments. The skills section gives you the opportunity to tell and go into detail with your potential employers about your leadership abilities, your presentation skills or your prowess in language and communication, while going into detail on examples of when . to shape you as a person, giving your CV life and personality.
Section 6 – Hobbies & Interests
When hiring, personality is becoming more and more of a significant factor for employers. While qualifications, skills and capability are definitely an important and key part of the hiring process, when it comes down to it, very few people will want to hire someone who they feel they wouldn’t get on with and who would be incompatible with their business. The hobbies and interests section provides you with the opportunity to show employers who you are as a person, showing them who you
are beyond your qualifications. Take this opportunity to share with your potential employers any sports you may be involved in, whether you write a blog, if you enter baking contests in your spare time; details about your personality and interests that
will leave them wanting to learn more about you, giving them no option but to invite you to interview and meet you in person.
